Miami Dolphins' Starting Quarterbacks Since Dan Marino Retired

When Tyler Thigpen starts under center for the Miami Dolphins on Thursday night against the Chicago Bears, he will become the 15th starting quarterback for the team since Hall of Famer Dan Marino retired after the 1999 season.

Which got me thinking about who they have been.    Here is the illustrious list of career backups, former first round picks, etc., with number of starts made (counting playoffs), without Thigpen and his one start included.

1. Jay Fiedler (62)
2. Chad Pennington (21)
3. Chad Henne (21)
4. Gus Frerotte (15)
5. Joey Harrington (11)
6. A.J. Feeley (8)
7. Cleo Lemon (8)
8. Ray Lucas (6)
9. Brian Griese (5)
10. Trent Green (5).
11. Daunte Culpepper (4)
12. John Beck (4)
13. Sage Rosenfels (2)
14. Damon Huard (1)

The Dolphins do, however, appear to have their quarterback of the future in Henne. So there may be some hope here.

A Fresh Candidate For The Minnesota Golden Gophers' Football Job

David Shaw
With the firing of Minnesota Golden Gophers' head football coach Tim Brewster nearly two weeks ago, there has been a lot of speculation as to who the university would go after to replace him, who would be interested, etc.  Some of the names that have been mentioned include Tony Dungy, Mike Belloti, Phillip Fulmer, Troy Calhoun and Kevin Sumlin.   I will mention a candidate I have not heard elsewhere at all, but I will first give credit where credit is due.

I was listening to KFAN AM-1130 here in the Twin Cities area earlier in the week, and the afternoon drive-time show hosted by Dan Barreiro had former Baltimore Ravens' head coach (and Minnesota Vikings' offensive coordinator) Brian Billick on as a guest to talk NFL.  Billick currently works as a Fox game analyst and also for NFL Network, and he had some good opinions on the Brett Favre story from a former head coach's perspective. Barreiro inevitably (and somewhat sarcastically, in my opinion) asked Billick if he had any interest in the Golden Gophers' job.  Billick quickly dismissed any notion of becoming a collegiate head coach, and mentioned a candidate I; and I suspect anyone else, had not heard before.  David Shaw, the current offensive coordinator at Stanford University.

Shaw is in his fourth season as the offensive coordinator at Stanford, and this year switched from coaching wide receivers to coaching the Cardinal running backs. Stanford's offense, led by junior quarterback Andrew Luck, currently ranks 15th in the nation in total offense (466.4 yards per game) and they rank fifth in the nation in scoring offense (42.6 points per game).  Stanford has steadily improved offensively under Shaw, as they set a school record in 2009 with 461 points (35.5 points per game) and scored 40 points or more four times and scored 50 or more in big wins over Oregon and USC

Prior to 2006 at the University of San Diego with current Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh, Shaw worked as an NFL assistant for nine seasons. That includes four seasons on Billick's offensive staff in Baltimore.  Shaw's father, Willie, was an NFL assistant coach for 15 seasons and an assistant coach for 33 seasons overall.

Shaw's lack of head coaching experience at any level may turn the Gophers' brass off since Tim Brewster had similar experience prior to being hired, but if the administration truly wants to leave no stone unturned I think they need to make the phone call. Maybe Harbaugh is interested in the job, but one if his assistants may be the more realistic candidate.

Ken Griffey Jr. Retires

On Wednesday, Ken Griffey Jr. announced his retirement from major league baseball.

He played 22 major league seasons, and was a virtual instant-success upon arriving to the big leagues in 1989 at the age of 19.   In his second season, he would hit 22 home runs, the first of his 15 seasons with at least 20 home runs.

Griffey Jr. was the #1 overall pick by the Mariners in 1987 out of Moeller High School in Cincinnati.  He would spend his first 11 seasons in Seattle before returning home after being traded to the Reds prior to the 2000 season.  Injuries plagued him during his time in Cincinnati, as he only played in more than 140 games twice in eight full seasons there.  He split the 2008 season between the Reds and the Chicago White Sox before returning to Seattle for the 2009 season.

Griffey was hitting .184 in 98 at-bats with the Mariners this season, and had not seen much playing time lately.  Not to mention the controversy over his unavailability when needed to pinch-hit in a game earlier this season.

Griffey finished his career with 630 home runs, good for fifth on the all-time list.  He was a 13-time All-Star, won 10 Gold Gloves and won the 1997 American League MVP when he hit 56 home runs and drove in 147 for Seattle.

Perhaps the most refreshing part of Griffey's career is we got to watch a slugger whose career came during the "Steroid Era" age naturally, as most athletes in other sports do.  He managed to avoid any ties to performance-enhancing drugs, and did not experience a physical transformation or power spike in his late-30's, ala Barry Bonds.   "The Kid" wasn't a kid anymore, and his skills eroded as such.

But one is left to wonder "what might have been?" with Griffey as well.  During a three-year stretch from 2002-2004 with the Reds, he played in a total of 206 games and hit a total of 41 home runs.  He was age 32, 33, and 34 during those seasons, so one could argue those were the seasons that could be considered the end of his prime as a hitter.  It's easy to imagine, at least in my opinion, Griffey reaching 700 home runs or more if he had been healthy during these three seasons.

Needless to say, Griffey will be a unanimous first-ballot Hall of Famer when he becomes eligible.

Ronnie James Dio (1942-2010)

I'm going to take brief diversion from sports with this post.
I'd like to showcase a poem I just wrote in memory of Ronnie James Dio, the famed former lead singer of Rainbow, Black Sabbath and of course the band that bore his last name.  He died this past Sunday at the age of 67 due to stomach cancer.

Without further ado, here is the poem, yet to be titled but I'll call it "Dio" for now.

We thought you'd live forever
But legends never truly die
The place you are is better
In our hearts you'll always lie

You chose to be a dreamer
And always make your mark
A light in the darkness
A rainbow in the dark

You were always a mystery
Who made us stand up and shout
You are the king of rock and roll
